BJX vs. QRO vs. Mexico City: Which Airport Should San Miguel Wedding Guests Use?

The short answer: recommend both QRO and BJX, then treat Mexico City as a useful alternative for guests who find a much better flight. QRO usually has the shortest drive to San Miguel. BJX is slightly farther but may offer a better nonstop for some guests. MEX has far more flight choices, but the ground transfer can take 3.5 to 4 hours before allowing for heavy city traffic.

Do not force every guest through one airport unless you are chartering transportation around specific flights. The better plan is to give guests a preferred arrival window, explain the tradeoffs clearly, and collect flight details before booking transfers.

Transportation options and current price ranges

Intercity buses are the lowest-cost option for independent guests

ETN and Primera Plus serve San Miguel's Central de Autobuses. ETN currently publishes fares from MXN $475 from Mexico City Terminal Norte and from MXN $85 from the Querétaro bus terminal. The bus does not complete the airport-to-hotel trip.

From MEX, a traveler must first reach a departure terminal such as Central del Norte, allow time for the next bus, then take a taxi or app ride from San Miguel's bus station to the hotel. From QRO, the low intercity fare applies after reaching the Querétaro bus terminal. BJX bus combinations can require a connection through León or another regional terminal. That makes the bus practical for experienced, budget-minded travelers with flexible schedules and light luggage. It is a poor default for late arrivals, formalwear, children, or guests who are unfamiliar with the route.

Uber can cost less, but acceptance is part of the risk

Uber's route pages currently show a QRO-to-San Miguel average of MXN $1,283 and a BJX-to-San Miguel average of MXN $1,685. The displayed ride types span roughly MXN $833 to $1,985 from QRO and MXN $1,610 to $2,031 from BJX. These are historical averages, not fixed fares.

An app estimate does not guarantee that a driver will accept a long airport trip at the required time. Pickup rules may also place the meeting point away from the airport taxi line. Tell guests to confirm the pickup pin in the app, verify the vehicle and driver, and keep the official taxi desk or a prebooked transfer as a backup. For a wedding VIP, an older relative, or a late-night arrival, certainty may be worth more than the possible savings.

Airport taxis and private drivers offer the clearest handoff

Licensed airport taxi desks can quote a direct trip after arrival, while a private transfer is booked before the flight and usually includes driver contact and flight monitoring. Public airport-taxi tariffs for all three complete routes were not available in a consistent form during this review, so the article does not assign them a made-up range. Ask for the total price before boarding and confirm whether it includes tolls, airport fees, waiting, and hotel delivery.

For a planning benchmark, one private operator publishes sedan ranges of USD $90 to $150 from QRO, USD $120 to $190 from BJX, and USD $260 to $400 from MEX. Obtain at least two current quotes for the actual date. Larger SUVs, vans, child seats, accessible vehicles, extra stops, and after-hours service may cost more.

Shared shuttles sit between the bus and a private car

Companies such as BajioGo advertise shared and private service between San Miguel, QRO, and BJX. Shared service can reduce the per-person price, but guests accept fixed departure times and possible additional stops. Public prices were not consistently displayed when checked, so request a written quote using the airport, flight time, passenger count, luggage, and hotel address.

For two people, compare the combined shared-shuttle price with one Uber or private sedan. For a family or several guests on the same flight, a private van may cost less per person and remove the wait for unrelated passengers.

QRO is usually the simplest arrival

Querétaro International Airport is the closest of the three common options. San Miguel's tourism office places the drive at roughly 60 to 70 minutes. For a guest landing after a long travel day, that shorter transfer has real value.

QRO works best when the flight schedule is reasonable and the fare is not substantially worse than BJX. It is also the easiest airport around which to build a small shared transfer. Two couples arriving within an hour of each other may be able to use one appropriately sized vehicle without creating a long wait.

BJX can be the better flight decision

Bajío International Airport, also called Guanajuato International Airport, is near Silao. The tourism office estimates approximately 90 minutes by road to San Miguel. Guanajuato's official connectivity page listed domestic and international service as of August 2026, including several routes to the United States.

The extra driving time may be a sensible trade when BJX provides a nonstop and QRO requires a connection. Ask guests to compare the complete trip, including departure time, connections, luggage collection, and ground transportation. A shorter drive does not repair a difficult flight itinerary.

Mexico City works when the flight advantage is substantial

Mexico City International Airport can be useful for guests who have a direct international flight, a better fare, or plans to spend time in Mexico City. The tradeoff is the road journey. San Miguel's tourism office estimates 3.5 to 4 hours, and traffic around Mexico City can add uncertainty.

MEX is rarely the best airport for a guest landing shortly before the welcome party. It works better when the guest arrives at least a day early or treats Mexico City as part of the trip. Couples should avoid scheduling a shared MEX vehicle around passengers on unrelated flights unless everyone understands the possible wait.

Do not compare airfare alone

The useful comparison is door-to-door travel, not the airfare displayed first. Ask each guest to consider:

Total flight time and number of connections
Checked-bag transfer risk
Airport arrival time
Ground-transfer price and duration
Waiting time for a shared vehicle
Hotel check-in time and the first wedding event
Whether children, older adults, or mobility needs require a private transfer

A cheaper MEX ticket may lose its advantage after adding several hours and a longer private transfer. A higher QRO fare may still be the better overall trip. BJX often sits between those choices.

Three guest-arrival situations

Ten guests on two coordinated flights

Recommend the airport with the best combined flight schedule, then ask a transportation provider for one or two vehicles sized for passengers and luggage. Keep the wait for the first arriving group explicit before anyone books.

Sixty guests arriving over six hours

Collect every itinerary in a manifest before assigning vehicles. Group by airport and realistic pickup window, not airline alone. Several scheduled departures may cost more than one large vehicle, but they keep early guests from waiting for hours.

Guests choosing Mexico City for a lower fare

Let those guests know that MEX creates a separate ground journey. Encourage arrival a day early and provide both a reserved-car option and public-bus information. Do not promise a transfer price until a provider confirms the vehicle, tolls, waiting policy, and final address.
